In China declared war on porn
BEIJING - China on Monday launched a wide campaign to stamp out Internet pornography, which will focus on the content of popular portals and major search engines like Google. Seven government agencies will work together on the campaign "to purify the cultural content of the Internet and protect the healthy development of minors," said the official site of the Chinese government china.com.cn. Pornography is banned in China, although the government has struggled to block websites with offices abroad. The government reported that Google and Baidu, the two most popular online search engines in China, have not taken "efficient" to end the problem after receiving warnings from the government on its links to pornographic material. 
The campaign against those who act against morality also mentioned portals Sina and Sohu popular, as well as others offering videos and newsletters which the government contain photos, blogs and announcements problematic. The government announced that those who continue promoting pornography will be punished severely, but did not indicate how long the campaign. Cui Jin, a spokeswoman for Google in China, defended the operations of the site saying it's just a search engine does not generate pornographic content. The company operates within the parameters of Chinese law, he added.
"If we find any violation, we will take appropriate action. So far, we have not found any, "said Cui. Baidu did not respond immediately to discuss an email about the campaign and no one answered the phones of Sina and Sohu. China is the country with most Internet users the world over 250 million.
The central government has already blocked access to many Internet sites it deems subversive or too political, including the site of the New York Times on Dec. 19. It was unlocked two days later and remained in operation on Monday. Beijing eased its control over various media and Internet portals in the 2008 Olympics, in a gesture intended to announce to the international community that the games provided more freedom to the Chinese population.
